Early Life and Education


Ian Cardozo was born to Vincent Cardozo and Diana Cardozo in 1937 in Bombay,British India .
He studied at St Xaviers college mumbai and has cleared his NDA exam to get commissioned into Indian Army.

MILITARY CAREER

Cardozo graduated from National Defence Academy and there after he joined IMA from where he was commissioned into the 1st battalion of 5 Gorkha Rifles,he also served into the 4,5 Gorkha and fought two war alongside them Indo-Pakistan war 1965 and Indo-Pakistan war 1971.He was the first cadet of NDA to get both Gold medal and Silver Medal. 

Story Of his Exemplary Courage in 1971 War


During the war of 1971 General Cardozo was attending the course at Defence Service Staff College ,his battalion was already deployed in Eastern province of Bangladesh so after his battalion's second in command was killed in action,Cardozo was ordered to replace him.
He was the one who took part in Indian Army first heliborne operation.He was called as Kartoos Sahab by his Gorkha men as they found pronouncing his name difficult.
toward the end of the war,Cardozo stepped on a land mine because of which his leg was severely injured.Due to non-availablity of morphine and absence of medical team his leg could not be amputated surgically.Faced with the threat of the gangrene spreading in his body,Cardozo used his own 'KUKRI' to cut off his leg.Later a Pakistani military doctor captured by Indian forces operated on him.

Career After war


Cardozo lost his leg in a war because of which he could not be given command of a battalion according to the rule of Indian Army and was ordered to serve the country in an administrative way but Cardozo refused to do that and took up the army physical fitness test again in which he defeated 7 men of Indian armed forces and proved his efficiency once again so the chief of army staff then General Tapishwar Narain Raina assigned him the battalion and later he was promoted to the rank of brigadier on 1 March 1984. Now he is retired officer and currently lives in New Delhi with his wife and three sons.
